Balance - How a Consultant Gets Work-Life Balance - The Muse
Balance - How a Consultant Gets Work-Life Balance - The MuseBalance - How a Consultant Gets Work-Life BalanceConsulting, like many other industries such as banking and law, is often criticized for its lack of balance and intense working environment. These types of jobs require a huge commitment to work, and this can often mean that the other aspects of your life fall by the wayside. But just because you love the fast-paced and intense environments these careers offer, doesnt mean that you need to turn into a complete workaholic and lose all semblance of a life. Here are some strategies my colleagues and I have found helpful in managing some balance in the imbalance. Whether you work in an intense industry like mine or not, they can be used by anyone looking to up the level of life in the work-life equation.1. Think of it as a Game of AveragesA lot of work-life balance conversations focus on the balance that people can find on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, when you work in an env ironment where this isnt always in your control or what is expected of you (read weekly travel and 9 PM calls), it can be better to take a broader view of what balance means. In other words, I often strive for average balance over a longer period of time. On a weekly basis, this might mean pulling 15-plus hour days Monday through Thursday, but that Friday evening and Saturday are completely off-limits for work. On an annual basis, this might mean working crazy hours plus weekends for a few months, but then seeking out an arrangement or project with a less intense schedule for the remaining months in the year where you can add in volunteering, working out, and mora friend and family time. In consulting, due to the nature of the industry and how projects change quite frequently, it can be easy to seek out projects with different intensities based on what you need. The key is to communicate with your leadership and manager about your desire to take on a project with a different time co mmitment. Typically, people will accommodate it (as a gesture to keep you sane) if its something you need. 2. Pick Your PrioritiesWhile it might be easy to say that you want to have it all- a fulfilling and challenging career, an active social life, the ability to run competitive marathons, time to cook dinner for the family, a full nights sleep, and so on- we all know thats not exactly possible. So, a key step in finding balance is to have a clear prioritization of what is important to you. Balance doesnt necessarily mean spending an equal distribution of time across all aspects of life in general- it can be (and should be) different for everyone. For example, work is most important to me, quickly followed up by my social life and working out. This means I typically eat into more of my sleep time than most of my friends and always look for convenience in my mealtimes. While I admire my friends who religiously pack their lunches and cook dinner, this just isnt the most important thi ng for me, and I am more than happy to compromise it to achieve other things. Its a matter of quality over quantity By spending your limited time on whats most important to you, youll feel more balanced than if you tried to cram everything into that time.3. Delegate the Easy StuffNow, about that low-priority stuff? There a few tactics and hacks that my friends who work in time-consuming and intense jobs apply. First, if you arent fortunate yet to have access to a personal assistant, consider hiring a virtual one or a student to help you with some of your tasks. Whether its booking appointments, paying bills, printing, shopping, or the other number of small tasks that add up to huge time expenditure and an endless to-do list, an assistant can help you unlock more time in your day for the things that matter. One of my friends who works in finance does this often, and she cant ever imagine her life without the extra help. A number of my friends also use time-saving services such as hou se cleaning, pre-made frozen meal services, or grocery delivery to help ease the pressure of completing necessary chores. This can cut down on time spent doing not-fun yet necessary things like grocery runs, Sunday morning cleaning and laundry, and the like- and gives you more time for the things that make you happy.4. Look for Small WinsWhile I do play a game of averages when approaching work-life balance, I also look for small wins throughout my day to try to achieve what balance I can. For instance, whether its taking the stairs or walking a couple blocks extra before hopping onto transit, a little bit of fresh air and activity can help bring balance to an otherwise hectic day. This could also mean allowing yourself a 15-minute coffee with a friend for a quick laugh, taking a step back from your work to read an interesting article, or just picking something healthy for lunch. While taking 15 minutes here or there might seem impossible to do, in reality it will have very little im pact on your outputs (likely, people wont even notice youve taken the time). But it will make a big difference in your energy levels and balance. Even though its extremely easy to just put my head down and plug away when the work is piling up, I try to find these little bits of balance wherever I can throughout my day, When you work in a demanding industry, it can be extremely hard to achieve the sought after work-life balance that is the topic of so many conversations, but by changing your perspective, employing some hacks, and focusing on the big stuff, you can get to a better level of balance. Gross Revenue Description and Key Issues
Gross Revenue Description and Key IssuesGross Revenue Description and Key IssuesA businesss gross revenue is the money generated by all itsoperations before deductions are taken for expenses. Revenue can come from the sale of the companys products or services, from the sale of surplus equipment or property, or from the sale of shares of stock in the company. It can come from a variety of other sources (both large and small) including such things asinterest, royalties, and fees. In its simplest term, all the revenue of a business from all of its sources is added together to compute gross revenue. Gross revenue is generally referred to for a specific period of time, such as the gross revenue for the quarter or the gross revenue for the year. The Distinction Between ausverkauf and Gross Revenue Itsimportant to distinguish between gross revenue and the actual sales number inorganizations- especially when there are multiple sources of revenue such as sales, interest, and other procee ds. The sales number isall proceeds from customers for the provision of goods and services, less any sales-related expenses. This isoften referred to asnet revenue or operating revenue.Gross revenue references the total amount of the sales contract, while net revenue reflects the amount billed to the customer at that point in time. Analysis of Sales Numbers Itsimportant to identify the number that reflects the actual sales generated through the provision of goods and services for all comparison periods when you are evaluating company performance and comparing it to prior periods. Net revenue or operating revenue is useful for assessing trends and various measures and ratiosof the efficiency of the companys sales and marketing efforts. Some ratios incorporate gross revenues as well. A number offrequently referenced financial metrics that incorporate revenue totals include Sales growthThe compound annual growth rate in sales (CAGR)Gross and net profit marginsSelling, general and administrative (SGA) expenses to salesOperating expense ratiosAccounts receivable turnoverTotal asset turnoverFixed asset turnover These and other ratios that incorporate revenue numbers are carefully scrutinized by a firms management, as well as by external analysts, in order to gauge the overall health of a firms revenue generation activities. Pay Attention to Revenue Recognition Rules Recognized revenue is the amount of revenue thats allowed to be recognized in the current period as governed by generally accepted accounting principles. For businesses that rely on long-term contracts (or in software subscription or software license maintenance models), the true picture of health is the amount of revenue that is able to be recognized in that period. For example, an organization may contract for a sale with a value of $3 1000000 over three years, butit is only allowed to recognize that revenue in one-year chunks of $1 million.A software license might call for a maintenance fee o f $30,000 over three years, butthe firm can only recognize the revenue in one-year chunks, one month at a time. Ifthe maintenance agreement is established at the six-month mark in year number one, the firm can only recognize half of the annual amount or 6/12 of the one-year fee of $10,000, or $5,000 for that particular year. If you have any questions whatsoever about these key issues, you should always consult a qualified accountant (preferably one familiar with your business) to determine the proper revenue recognition rules for your business.

Why Every Company Should Write Its Own Obituary
Why Every Company Should Write Its Own Obituary Why work? The reasonable response might once have been to make money, and for some thats still true. But as our economy has evolved and work options have proliferated, the answer has changed for a growing majority of people. These days, many of us want mora than just a paycheck. To find, keep, and motivate great talent, businesses leaders must identify and share with the world why working at their organization is about achieving something more, together. Thats your companys purpose, the a grand vorstellung of why your organization exists beyond making money. Why dont more companies get clear about why they are in business? Because of the nearly inescapable gravity of traditional economic theory. Whole Foods CEO John Mackeys quote, You cant live if you dont eat, but you dont live to eat. And neither does business exist primarily to make a profit. It exists to fulfill its purpose, whatever that might be, was uttered in protestof the conservative economist Milton Friedmans famous proclamation, There is one and only one social responsibility of business to use its resources and engage in activities designed to increase its profits so long as it stays within the rules of the game.Unfortunately, many business leaders still think like Friedman, and its easy to landsee there is no role for purpose in this ancient worldview. Dont fall for it. Companiesthat short the circuitry of modern business by skipping the employee are doomed to customer backlash and long-term failure.Answering the Big QuestionsConvinced purpose is important? You arent home free yet. During the past decade of doing this work, Ive found the biggest challenge nearly every executive team must face is internal Its their inability to let go of the most immediate and pressing partes of the business.I get it. Rolling out the new product update and hitting quarterly financial goals are important. It can be scary to put that work down for even a day. But finding a companys purpose isnt about this quarter, or even this year it requires taking the long view. Imagining what doesnt exist is hard, but thats exactly what you must do to discover your purpose because its your future. How might the world be different because of your company? Step back and ask your team, Why does this company matter? Why will it be remembered? Im not asking for realism. We get enough of that. Instead, Im asking you to think big. When you are attempting this work, my advice is to not get bogged down in the specifics. Go far, as fast as possible. To find your purpose you may need to go 25, 50, 100 years in the future.Think you cant do it? I disagree. This obituary exercise has helped many leadership teams stretch their brains in the right direction, and Im certain it can help you, too.Write Your Companys ObituaryWhy write an obituary for your organization? By imagining the organization is dead, leaders and executives who are usually cons umed with the details are given permission to let go of the minutia. With day-to-day concerns out of the way, you have room to think bigger.Heres the overview 25 years from now your company has ceased to operate. Dont get bogged down in how it happened. That part doesnt matter. What does matter is putting on paper why the company will be remembered. Answer in3-5 short paragraphs questions like What were your companys greatest accomplishments? How did it change the world? By framing the obituary in this way, we dont need to be concerned about the profitability, only the companys impact.Hint Dont let reality get in the way. Think bigger than you might be comfortable with. Im giving you permission to write ridiculous, unlikely outcomes. Ive been in the room with fintech executives who wrote about how their startup solved global poverty, with a biotech team that eradicated all disease, and an enterprise technology services group who determined they helped establish the first colony on M ars.The value of this magical thinking is not in the ends, but in the words and phrases you and your team use to get there. Once youve written and presented your obituaries, ask everyone to identify the words, concepts, or phrases that were most compelling, the things that stood out or gave them goosebumps. Below are detailed instructions so you can get started with your team.InstructionsSplit workshop participants into three or four teams. No team should have more than five members.Instruct each team to work together to write the first draft of their obituary. They should end up with3-5short paragraphs that include only the most important details. Hint Bulleted lists dont work nearly as well as complete sentences. Dont let anyone go that route. (Time 30-45 minutes)Ask each team to make final edits and then transpose their entire obituary by hand onto the large sticky pad. Yes, they must write it out. And yes, they must put it up so everyone can see. (Time 30 minutes)Invite one pers on from each team to read back the obituary. (Time 20 minutes)Once all teams have presented, pass out the dot stickers. Each person will place the stickers next to the words and phrasesthey find most compelling or relevant. Each person gets 6-8 dots and can vote on anything, includingtheir own obituary. You can even put multiple dots on one idea if it seems particularly important. (Time 15 minutes)Once everyone has used all their stickers, ask one person to tally up the votes and fruchtmark the words and phrases that were most popular. (Time 10 minutes)As a group, discuss what you notice and what it might mean for the purpose of the organization. Talk about what got the most votes and why. Look for patterns. Are there any common themes? What stands out? What was expected or unexpected? (Time 30 minutes)What is your organizations reason for being? Finding your companys purpose isnt going to make work easier, but it will provide more clarity to help leaders make hard decisions, more m eaning to help employees do their jobs with more energy, and more value to help customers choose your brand more often.Josh Levineis theauthor of Great Mondays How to Design a Company Culture Employees Love.
